We picked the name "Honeycomb Design Studio" because a honeycomb is the perfect mix of strength, practicality, and good design—just like a well-built home or beautiful garden should be. Its hexagonal shape is incredibly adaptable, fitting together seamlessly to make the most of every space. That’s exactly what we aim to do for our clients: create designs that are efficient, thoughtful, and tailored to suit your needs.
Plus, let’s be honest, honeycombs just look cool—the perfect mix of smart design and natural beauty.

Both building designers and architects play important roles in the design and construction process, but the right choice depends on your specific needs.
Building designers are more focused on residential projects, like renovations, new builds, granny flat and garages, offering practical and cost-effective solutions that are closely tailored to your lifestyle and budget. While architects often work on larger or more complex projects, building designers are experts at creating functional, beautiful spaces that meet your vision and regulatory requirements and don’t require the same cost outlay as an architect. Ultimately, whether you choose a building designer or an architect, it’s about finding the right fit for your projects and goals.
Some quick questions to ask yourself are:
Do I want something truly unique and magazine worthy? If so, then an architect is the right choice
Do I want a new build or renovation that is sympathetic to the block and surrounds, takes into account things like sunpath and thermal efficiency but also want to keep costs down and just have a practicable, buildable, liveable design? If so, then a building designer is a great choice
Do I want the cheapest possible new build where it doesn’t matter what the orientation of the house to the block is? If so, then likely a developer home is right for you

Timelines can vary depending on several factors, including the size, location, and complexity of your project. Additional considerations, such as obtaining reports from external consultants, council/certifier approvals, and the pace of decision-making throughout the design and documentation process, can also influence the timeframe.
Every project is unique. We provide estimated timeframes for all phases of the project as part of our service proposal and will keep you updated throughout the process to help things run as smoothly as possible.
-
Our costs vary depending on the scope of your project. We provide quotes based on your specific needs and the complexity of the project. To make things easier, we charge for our services by each phase of the project, this approach ensures you can manage costs more effectively throughout the process.

Staying within budget starts with clear communication and careful planning. We’ll work with you from the beginning to understand your budget and design goals, creating a plan that balances your vision with financial considerations. As your design progresses, it can be helpful to engage with a builder or quantity surveyor early on to get cost estimates, giving you peace of mind and a more accurate understanding of your budget. It's also wise to factor in a contingency fund for unexpected costs, especially with renovations, as working with existing structures can sometimes add complexities compared to new builds.
One of the things we pride ourselves on at Honeycomb is translating your vision into a solution grounded in building and regulatory practicality. We don’t design houses that defy the laws of physics or result in nasty budget surprises.
We’ll also use our expertise to provide you with genuine feedback on where we think certain ideas might result in higher costs, so you can make fully informed decisions across the life of the project.
-
Absolutely!
At Honeycomb we’ve spent years working with the community and know just how much it means to have little design touches that meet the whole family’s needs. No matter how many kids, extended family or friends - whatever your living arrangements - we’ll design around your life and suggest ideas that will last the test of time (including for resale value).
Our mascot is our beloved Kelpie x Border Collie, Scout, so we know first hand that pets are often the centre of the home. Pets spend more time at home than anyone else, so we love also designing with your beloved fur baby (or any sort of pet) in mind.
-
Your input is essential! We involve you at every stage of the process, from initial concepts to final plans, ensuring your vision comes to life.
Collaboration is one of our core values, tweaking the design based on your feedback is a critical part of the process and one of the great advantages of engaging a building designer.

Your garden is often one of the things that differentiates your property from everyone elses. A well designed garden not only is a joy to be in, it adds significant value to your property.
Landscape design covers things you haven’t even thought of yet - such as hardscape design, lighting design, what “rooms” you will have in your garden, and plant selection.
At Honeycomb we can do all of this at the same time as your building design work, providing a complete package to suit your needs.
-
Yes! At Honeycomb we believe that your home is your castle, and your castle is not complete without your moat and market gardens!
We can combine packages to design your new build and landscape at the same time, or in stages when you need it.
We also specialise in small landscape jobs and glow ups, either alongside your renovation or as a completely separate service.
-
Yes! A Building Designer is also a qualified Draftsperson.
At Honeycomb, we can help you with any drafting job - no job is too big or too small. Whether it’s just because you’d like floorplans or site plans for future needs or for any sort of Council or other submission, we are here to help.
